What is Interlibrary Loan?
If an item you’re looking for is not owned by the Alumni Memorial Library, we may be able to borrow the material from another library in the United States through a service called InterLibrary Loan (ILL). Through ILL it is possible for you to obtain books, microfilm, articles and other items.

Who is eligible to use ILL?
You must have a current library card with borrowing privileges to request an ILL. You cannot have fines over $10 or any lost items on your library account.

Our ILL service is free as long as we can locate a free library lender for the item you’ve requested. If a free library lender cannot be found, you will be given the option of paying the lender’s loan fee. We will not initiate a request without obtaining your approval for charges.

Requesting Items

Interlibrary Loan materials may be requested in person at the circulation desk or via email. Please fill out the following forms (one request per form, please) or submit them as attachments to

ILL Request Form for Books and Audiovisual Materials (download form) or Request Book Online

ILL Request Form for Journals and Microforms (download form) or Request Article Online

Please note that the following material may be difficult to obtain: genealogical material; material not published in the United States; very old, rare, or expensive books; reference works; recreational videos (especially if DVD format); and dissertations and theses.

When Your ILL Arrives

Items usually arrive within 2 to 4 weeks. We will contact you via phone or email. Please pick up your item prompty since we cannot guarantee renewals.

Unfilled Requests

If we are unable to borrow an item you requested, we will contact you and explain the reason for refusal. You will then have the option of modifying your request (e.g., asking for VHS format instead of DVD) for resubmission. There is charge for this service; however, we cannot guarantee a free lender for the modified request.

Checking Out Your ILL
If you reside off-campus, you must come into the library to pick up your items. Resident faculty and seminarians may request that their items be placed in their mailbox in the ARK. Please do not remove the book bands from ILL material–they contain important information about renewing and returning your items.

Renewing Your ILL
Loan periods and renewals are determined by the lending library. Please be aware that some lenders do not allow renewals. To request a renewal, email the ILL librarian at at least one week before your item is due. The lending library usually determines a renewal within 2-5 business days. You will be notified by phone or e-mail of the final due date. Fines will not increase while a renewal is pending.

Returning your ILL
Please return ILL materials by the due date. There is a charge of 25 cents per day for overdue materials. Please return ILL materials inside the library (do not place in book bin) and give them to a librarian. If an item is lost, the patron is expected to pay the lender’s replacement charges.
