Happy Chinese New Year! Welcome The Year of the Horse

Those born under this sign are known to possess good communication skills and are cheerful and stubborn. They crave success, and they are popular and talented.

For those who want to join in on the festivities, below are a few sayings, greetings and proverbs to usher in the new year:

Greet the New Year and encounter happiness.

迎春接福 Yíngchúnjiēfú

May all your wishes be fulfilled.

萬事如意 Wànshìrúyì

Greetings for Year of the Horse:

 Get wealthy quick

马上有钱 Mǎshàng yǒu qián

Best wishes for the Year of the Horse

马年大吉 Mǎ nián dàjí

Success is on its way

马到成功 Mǎdàochénggōng

Some Proverbs for Year of the Horse:

If you want 1 year of prosperity, grow grain. If you want 10 years of prosperity, grow trees. If you want 100 years of prosperity, grow people.

If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else.

A closed mind is like a closed book; just a block of wood.

Forget the favors given; remember those received.

If Heaven made someone, earth can find some use for them.

“I heard” is good; “I saw” is better.

The Destruction of the Polish Elite – Operation AB – Katyn – Now on Display

The Adam Cardinal Maida Alumni Library welcomes the Polish Mission exhibition, Operation AB – Katyn. The installation is on display from Monday, December 2, 2013 through Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Adam Cardinal Maida Alumni Library.  Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm and Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.  Admission is free and open to the public.

About the Exhibition: Operation AB – Katyn is a multi-panel educational project that aims to shed light on the cooperative efforts of Nazi Germany and the U.S.S.R. to systematically exterminate the elites of the Polish population in WWII. Using never-before-seen photographs and avant-garde scholarship, the panels are an invitation to learn about the horrendous crimes against the Polish people, and to raise questions about accountability for actions. Those crimes perpetrated by the Soviet Union, described collectively as the Katyn Massacre, have never been prosecuted.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – Banned Books week –

I am so very proud to say that we teach a lot of Banned Books here at OLSM.  I can definitely say that I’m with the Banned!  When I see each year’s list, which always includes the Bible, the Koran, the dictionary and many from what is considered to be the literary canon – I often wonder what chemicals bubble up in a person’s brain to ban a book.  Unfortunately, even in a digital world, attempted censorship seems to never fade away.

Judy Blume, J.K. Rowling, Margaret Mitchell, Galileo and Antonio Rosmini are all banned authors.  Read them today!  Let the flame of independent thought burn bright!
